Yes, the vertical spike definitely helps. The thing's very smooth.
Since you asked, could you give a depth hint to the robot head? Maybe an outside on two sides, or something.
What are you thinking of for sound? I found myself imagining "KACHUNK" for each downward impression.
If you're looking for sounds, I copied some clips to your server space.

I like it a lot. I think the thing that caught my eye the most was the different textures on the wheel...to prove to the audience that it was truly turning. Nice touch.
